2023 Kia EV6 GT: Performance rises as range sinks | news

The 2022 Kia EV6 already holds its own among electrified rivals in terms of ride comfort, acceleration and user-friendly tech features, but Kia promised a higher-performance GT model when it debuted. The 2023 EV6 GT will go up against competitors like the Tesla Model Y Performance and the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT. Although largely similar to the current EV6, the GT has more power, quicker acceleration and a unique sports suspension to leave lesser models in the dust. Here’s what sets it apart and how it compares to its performance-oriented competitors, at least on paper.

Performance Chops

Currently, EV6 buyers can choose between a standard 58.0 kilowatt-hour battery or a 77.4 kWh long-range battery. The SUV’s single-motor rear-wheel drive system makes 167 hp, while an available dual-motor all-wheel drive system boosts output to 320. Upon arrival, the GT will come exclusively with the larger battery, a of 160 kilowatts. front engine and 270 kW rear engine, and standard AWD, with 576 hp and 546 lb-ft of torque.

The GT comes with a sports suspension with electronically controlled dampers and a unique front suspension aimed at improving handling and balance. The GT also adds an electronic limited-slip differential for cornering stability, and larger disc brakes (15-inch front, 14.2-inch rear) fit behind wrapped 21-inch alloy wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 tires.

Kia estimates the EV6 GT to sprint from 0 to 60 mph in 3.4 seconds and top speed at 161 mph; the brand says it beat the Ferrari Roma and Lamborghini Huracan Evo Spyder RWD in independent drag race tests. But these supercars aren’t the EV6’s real competitors. Instead, it will go up against the Model Y Performance and Mustang Mach-E GT, both of which have an estimated 0-60 time of 3.5 seconds.

Customizable driving modes

The EV6 GT adds three new driving modes to the standard EV6’s existing ones: Eco, Normal, Sport and Snow. Exclusive modes include GT Drive, My Drive and Drift. Kia says GT Drive automatically optimizes the performance of the SUV’s engines, braking, steering, suspension and electronic stability control, while My Drive mode allows drivers to select custom settings based on driving preferences. Drift mode allows drivers to adjust power distribution to the rear wheels, according to Kia, which will likely make it easier for drivers to drift the EV6 GT.

GT Looks

The EV6 GT has small visual tweaks inside and out to denote its performance capabilities and differentiate it from lesser models. On the outside, the changes start with neon green accents found on the vehicle’s brake calipers. The GT also has unique front and rear styling along with a rear spoiler and diffuser.

Inside, the GT gets racing-inspired bucket seats with vegan suede upholstery, a GT logo and neon green accent stitching and piping. In addition, the range-topping model adds ambient lighting for the door panels, center console and dashboard.

The scope cannot keep up

The GT’s increased performance comes with one notable benefit: reduced range. While it doesn’t yet have official EPA ratings, Kia says the GT will have an estimated range of 206 miles. That’s considerably lower than the EV6’s current EPA of 232 miles for the standard range model and up to 310 miles for the long-range variant. Not only does the GT’s range fall short compared to other trims, but also its competitors: The 2022 Mustang Mach-E GT has an EPA-estimated range of 270 miles, and the 2022 Model Y’s performance is a classification of 303 miles.

Price and release date

The 2023 Kia EV6 GT will be available in late 2022 and pricing will be announced closer to its arrival. The 2022 EV6 currently starts at $42,695 (all prices include destination charge) for the base model, and the new GT should be priced above the 2022 GT-Line’s $57,695.
